Fleetwood are a team in the third tier of English football, and they finished Fifteenth in League One in the 2020/21 season. They score 60 points to finish comfortably in mid-table and ahead of Jimmy-Floyd-Hasselbaink's Burton Albion side.
With Fleetwood being placed under a transfer embargo it has forced their hand into giving the youth a chance to prove they can make it in the professional game and youth defender Billy Batch is one of the lads that has been given that chance
The young defender from Norwich helped a Fleetwood side go on their longest FA Youth Cup run in history and was in the matchday squad to face Hull in the EFL trophy in January.
His professional contract is on a one-year deal ending in June 2022 with the Lancashire based club holding the option of extending the deal by a further year.
I caught up with the young defender in a question-and-answer session ahead of Fleetwood's preseason games.
Q: Firstly, do you want to tell the people reading a little bit about yourself mate
A: I am hardworking and committed, but also do not take myself too seriously and love to have a laugh with whatever I do.
Q: You are currently contracted with Fleetwood Town so what do you hope to accomplish in the short term?
A: Getting into the First team.
Q: During your time at Fleetwood is there any one main area of your game you want to improve, if so, what is it?
A: I would like to make more goal contributions to help the team.
Q: Is there any one player past or present that you would liken your game to?
A: Andy Robertson at Liverpool.
Q: Can you explain why you would liken yourself to the Scottish left-back?
A: Because we play the same position and have similar styles, are both very energetic.
Q: Apart from Fleetwood is there any dream club you would want to sign for?
A: Liverpool
Q: Who would your dream coach be to play under?
A: Jurgen Klopp
Q: Why would you love to play under the German coach?
A: I like the energy and intensity his teams play with.
Q: Next one, how difficult was your path to a pro contract and just how much effort did it take?
A: Yeah, it was full of highs and lows such as breaking my leg, but it all made me stronger.
Q: What trophies do you hope to win during your career in football?
A: The trophies of every competition that I am involved in.
Q: Finally, after it's all said and done at the end of your Carrer, what do you want to have accomplished?
A: I want to have played a few hundred games in the football league and to have no regrets.
What a young player Billy Batch is and from his answers above one thing stands out and that is the mindset and determination. With a love for the game, I'm sure that the young defender will achieve everything he wants to achieve in English football.
